Let’s Hope Governor Improves in 2016

Gov. Tom Wolf took the oath of office in January 2015, promising Pennsylvanians a “government that works,” “schools that teach” and “jobs that pay.”

During his first year, state government went nearly six months without a budget after he vetoed a balanced, on-time spending plan in June. Without state funding, human service agencies and local governments were forced to take out loans and use limited resources to pay for interest. Funds for these entities only began flowing after the governor signed a budget bill in late December.

Schools and students also were harmed by the governor’s budget veto. Several school districts appeared on the verge of shutting their doors before the governor finally released the funds.

With state tax dollars trapped in Harrisburg, some social service agencies were forced to cut payroll or reduce services. The people who help some of our most vulnerable citizens had their paychecks threatened as a result of the governor’s budget veto.

To recap, instead of fixing Harrisburg, he made it more like Washington, D.C. Instead of supporting education, he endangered it. Instead of promoting jobs, his actions threatened them.

Let’s hope the governor does better in 2016.
